Herb 1.6 m high. Stems and leaves rather dark. Inflorescence a rhizome at base of leafy shoot. Flowers pinkish purple, almost red at top of dorsal tepal. Yellow in throat. Fruits green, unripe, finely grooved. Persistant calyx.
